A Surprising Solution for Plumbing Problems

WD-40 is the unsung hero for a variety of Plumbing Problems

When it comes to household problem-solving, one might not immediately think of WD-40 as a go-to solution for plumbing issues. However, this versatile and widely-used lubricant and penetrating oil can be surprisingly effective in tackling various common plumbing problems. There are many times that customers call a plumber in Glasgow when in actual fact, a simple spray of WD40 is all they needed to fix the issue.

Loosening Stuck or Rusty Nuts and Bolts

One of the most common plumbing issues homeowners face is dealing with stuck or rusty nuts and bolts. These can be found on pipe connections, taps and other plumbing fixtures. WD-40 is an excellent choice for loosening these stubborn fasteners. Simply spray WD-40 directly onto the affected area and allow it to penetrate for a few minutes. The lubricating properties of WD-40 will make it easier to turn and remove these difficult nuts and bolts without damaging them.

Unclogging Slow Drains

Clogged drains can be a major headache. While WD-40 won’t serve as a long-term solution for severe clogs, it can help with minor blockages caused by hair, soap scum, or grease build up. This is a short term solution and while we think WD40 is wonderful, we would prefer that customers don’t continuously use it down the drain as it is bad for the environment.  Instead, if you have a blocked drain, contact our Drainage team at JSL-Drainage.

Preventing Rust and Corrosion

Plumbing fixtures, especially those exposed to moisture, are susceptible to rust and corrosion over time. WD-40 can help prevent these issues by creating a protective barrier. Regularly applying a light coating of WD-40 to exposed metal parts such as pipes, joints, and faucets can help extend their lifespan and maintain their functionality.

Quietening Noisy Pipes

Noisy pipes can be irritating, and they often result from pipes rubbing against each other or against the framing of your home. To address this problem, spray WD-40 on the pipes or areas where they make contact. The lubricant will reduce friction and minimise the annoying sounds caused by movement. This is however a short term solution. If you have pipes rubbing together, it may be caused by poor plumbing work by other installers.  It is best to call our plumbers to investigate this to ensure that the problem does not become worse.

Removing Adhesive Residue

When working on plumbing projects, you may encounter adhesive residue from labels, tape, or sealants. WD-40 can be used to effectively remove this sticky mess from pipes, connectors, and tools. Apply WD-40 to the affected area, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe away the residue with a cloth or paper towel.

Freeing Stuck Tap Handles

Stuck tap handles can be a frustrating plumbing issue. Applying WD-40 to the connection between the handle and the faucet can help loosen it. After spraying, gently twist the handle to work the lubricant into the tight spot. This should make it easier to turn and operate the faucet smoothly.

While WD-40 may not be a conventional plumbing tool, its versatility and lubricating properties make it a valuable resource for addressing various plumbing problems. From loosening stuck fasteners to preventing rust and even quieting noisy pipes, WD-40 can be a handy addition to your plumbing toolkit. However, remember that it’s not a substitute for professional plumbing repairs when necessary.
