It is simple a form of insulation for pipes to keep them insulated or protected from the outside elements.
For boilers, the pipes connecting the boiler to the radiators should be fitted with pipe lagging to help retain as much of the heat energy as it moves through the pipes and into the radiators of your home.
Pipe lagging is also used to protect pipes from sub zero temperatures and freezing. So if you have pipes under the floor that or more easily exposed to the outside elements then pipe lagging can be added to protect the pipes from freezing.
The sub zero temperatures that we experienced in the build up to Christmas were pretty extreme and at JSL Plumbing, we dealt with a number of call outs from customers who had frozen taps and even frozen toilets. While pipe lagging has its limitations, having them fitted will make a big difference to whether you suffer from frozen pipes or not.
